Piriformis Syndrome

One of the most common causes of sciatic pain.
Sciatic nerve passed immediately below the piriformis muscle, spasms or inflammation of the piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve causes pain and other symptoms.

Causes:

  • Sedentary occupations, sitting throughout the day agitates the piriformis muscle
  • Traumatic injuries and accidents to the buttock
  • Short, tight piriformis muscle
  • Lack of flexibility
  • Poor posture
  • Muscle imbalance
  • Misalignments of the joints in the lumbar and sacrum

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Deep-seated pain in the buttock and around the tail bone
  • Tenderness and pain at the piriformis muscle
  • Pain and numbness along the leg when seated
  • Lower back pain, pelvic pain, pain in the buttock and/or hips
  • Deep aches in the buttock
  • Burning, electrical pain down the leg
